DLP4500: Stuck mirrors on the dlp4500

Part Number: DLP4500

Greetings,

at the moment i have a problem with the DLP4500. Last week all went well with it but when i turned it on today (after some cleaning with ethanol) it showed for a short period of time the chosen picture. In this small time span there were many areas where mirrors weren't changing their status and after a few seconds the picture vanished completely. While this is happening the DLP gets extreme hot. After shuting the Lighcrafter Module down the mirrros are stuck in a random position(on/off positions). When it's cooled down you can turn it on again and spectate the exact same happening.

I read on the forum changing the firmware could help or just resetting but this didn't change anything. I also checked all the connections and could not find anything faulty.

So now to my questions:

Can i fix this or is it damaged? - if it's damaged:  Could this be caused by the cleaning? What else could be the reason for it to break down within one day?

There is a UART - port on the DLPLCR4500 which i connected via RS232 to pc - is there a chance to read out the error messages send by the Lightcrafter trough this port with the Control - Software of the Lightcrafter?

Thank you for your help in advance

Philipp

  • Hello Phiilipp,

Could you please clarify which part of the EVM you cleaned with ethanol? Was it the DMD itself? Could you also please confirm which part of the EVM was getting hot? Was it the DMD or some other part?

If you are still able to connect via the GUI and control the unit you can see if there are any errors.

    Thanks,
    Kyle
  • Hello Kyle,
i only cleaned the glass substrate of the dmd. The ethanol itself didn't get in contact with any electronics of the dmd or the Lightcrafter.
The part that got hot was the metal backside off the DMD. The Lightcrafter and everything else stayed at normal temperature.

I am also still able to connect with the GUI and it doesn't show me any errors. All the correct status lights on the lightcrafter are also lit. When i "set" a picture from the internal flash everything is fine within the program, but the DMD doesn't respond.

    Greetings,
    Philipp
  • Hi Philipp,

Can you observe if the RGB LEDs are on? Also, have you checked the connection of the controller and DMD to make sure everything is intact?

    Thanks & Regards,
    Hirak.
  • Hello Hirak,

i don't use the lightcrafter module with the onboard LEDs, but rather with a fs - laser (the intensity which is used on the DMD should not damage it - atleast not in the time span the laser got reflected by the Mirrors) . The connection is fine - i checked more than one time.

I attached a file, so you can see the problem - the mirrors are stuck in a random position even when there is no connection to the lightcrafter, normally they should all go back to the parking position...

    Greetings,

    Philipp

  • Hi Philipp,

Are you operating the DMD outside the optical engine? When you removed it for cleaning did you detach it from its connector? If you are using the FQE package outside an optical engine then it is easy to accidentally rotate the DMD when reinstalling it on its connector, and that may cause the type of damage in your photo.

  • Hi Layne,
i have 2 of those mirrors - one where we tried to find out what fluence we can use without damaging it and the one which now broke down. The one used for test purposes was more than one time attached the wrong way and all the mirrors (except the ones damaged by the laser - which was intended) all went back to their "normal" position. So attaching the dmd in the wrong way to the lightcrafter didn't seem to cause this problem, especially since i made sure this doesn't happen to the new (now broken down) DMD.

My question is also, what causes those mirrors to be stuck in those random positions when they aren't even attached to the lightcrafter.
Why does this happend and what cause ssomething like this to happend?

    Greetings,
    Philipp
  • Hi Layne,

Do you still need the answer to your question? I'll be temporarily closing this thread due to inactivity, you can reopen anytime.
