DLP6500FYE: DLP6500 custom design: Mirror stripe problem

Part Number: DLP6500FYE
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPLCR65NEVM, DLPC900, DLPC910

I am working with a custom design that uses the DLP6500 chipset. I have experienced a problem with the DMD where after powerup a block of mirrors along the long axis of the device does not switch state, resulting in a stripe in the projected image.  This problem does not happen every time we turn on the device, maybe 1 out of 40 power cycles has the issue.  Also it seems that once a board powers up properly it will stay running and if a block of mirrors does get stuck a power cycle will generally fix the issue.

I recently ran across a thread referenced below which shows the same behavior on the DLPLCR65NEVM reference design and the recommended solution, which appears to have worked for them, was to check for debris on the flex cable.  This is not possible for me because the DLPC900 and DLP6500 are on the same PWB with no flex between them.  The referenced E2E thread suggested it is "a micromirror Reset Block that is not connected or is poorly connected".  Which signals specifically might be affecting this that I can take a closer look at?

I have multiple boards that have experienced this issue at one time or another but it does not happen after every powerup.  I suspect that it is either a timing problem or a noise problem but I'm not sure which signals to look at in more detail.

I appreciate your help.

Regards,

Tim

  • Hello Tim,

I am sorry for the late reply on this.  We are looking at this, but it is completely unrelated to the issue seen on the DLPC910.

We do not know at this point what the underlying source is at this point.  I wish that I had a more definitive answer.

As we know more we will let you know.
