DLP3030PGUQ1EVM: PGU unit for Heads up Display

Part Number: DLP3030PGUQ1EVM

Hi,

I am studying DLP3030PGUQ1EVM as a HUD light source, but the user's guide contains less information.

Can someone help my questions below:

1. What is the dimension of the PGU?

2. What is the active area of the PGU?

3. What is the view angle (or chief ray angle) from the diffuser?

4. Can I have projection lens layout information in the PGU?

5. Can I control the movement of this unit using a stepper motor to adjust the location of image displayed on the windshield of a car?

Here is the reference design: http://www.ti.com/solution/head-up-display-hud?variantid=22362&subsystemid=24904

  • Hi Arshiya,

    1. What is the dimension of the PGU?

Excluding the heatsinks, I would say about 160 mm x 100 mm x 75 mm.

    2. What is the active area of the PGU?

The diagonal micromirror array size is .3 inch for our DLP3030-Q1 DMD. Page 1 and page 17 of the DLP3030-Q1 datasheet has some very good information on this.

    3. What is the view angle (or chief ray angle) from the diffuser?

For the PGU and the diffuser, 8.87 deg incident image center chief ray hits PGU pupil at ~ 126mm. This is at about 108 mm throw distance.

    4. Can I have projection lens layout information in the PGU?

The actual projection lens design is the proprietary information of another company.

    5. Can I control the movement of this unit using a stepper motor to adjust the location of image displayed on the windshield of a car?

Yes, this is just a PGU and you can use it in anyway to achieve your design goal.

Please keep in mind that is just an EVM for you to see the capabilities of our chipset. In an actual design, you will go through the process to design/optimize the optics and mechanical components for your needs, so I don't think you need to dive too deep at the moment. We can have more offline discussions when you get to the actual design stage.

    Hope this helps,

    Peng

  • Hi Peng,

Thank you for the answers. I have more clarity now.

8.2.1 HUD Reference Design and LED Controller Reference Design

The complete HUD reference design is available from TI, including electronics (Schematic) and PCB (Gerber) design, opto-mechanical design (CAD and Zemax models), sample software, and other system reference design documentation. Additionally, there are application notes describing the Piccolo LED driver and color control circuit. Contact TI application engineering for access to these application notes and design information.

I came across this paragraph in the datasheet for DLP303Q1: https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/dlp3030-q1.pdf?&ts=1590007992286

Can you please let me know how to access these app notes and design for Piccolo LED driver and color control circuit?

    Thank you,

    Arshiya Tabassum

  • Hi Arshiya,

I have sent you an offline message and can grant you access to those documents.

    Regards,

    Peng
