DLP2010: Understanding the DLP's color system and mirror mechanics

Howdy,

I am part of a research team at Texas A&M and we bought a DLP to help us with our project. We are currently trying to figure out how a DLP works and really understand it. We are planning on replacing the DLP2010 on our EVM with a DLP2010NIR sometime soon. For now we just took apart the optical machine of the EVM to better understand it. We are wondering what this optical machine does to display all the different colors. Looking at a programed DLP itself under a microscope we can tell the difference between different colors, almost as if the mirrors themselves have different angles for different colors. Is this true?

Also how does the machine separate the red, green, and blue led lights? Does it shine red then green then blue so fast the human eye can't detect it or does the DLP itself have different angles for different wavelengths of color?

Hi Philippe,

Thank you. I found some more info there but I have a few questions. What is the total frame time for the DLP2010? I saw that the time each color is shown is a percentage of the total frame time and I am wondering what that time is.

Also, unrelated, I am interested in replacing the flex cable with a longer flex cable and I was wondering if you knew where that was possible? I looked at Asia Optical's webpage and they did not seem to have any flex cables under their products.

Angie,

The frame time is going to depend on your given frame rate for the system. If you are running at, say, 60 Hz you will have a 1/60 second frame time.

You certainly could use a longer flex cable if you designed one. However, you should note that the flex cable is designed with high-speed video signals in mind. As such, a longer flex cable or improperly designed one may introduce signal integrity problems.
