DLPLCR4500EVM: Flex cable connection with the DMD

Part Number: DLPLCR4500EVM

Hi,

Could I please check whether the DMD can be connected to the driver board in the opposite direction? Is there a polarity in the flex cable connection? I have managed to remove the DMD from the light engine and would like to use it with the existing driver board. It would be easier for the setup if I could flip the DMD around (i.e. facing away from the original light engine position).

Thank you!

Kind Regards

Cheryl

  • Hello Cheryl,

I do not think it is possible to reverse the actual flex cable connection to the DMD. Is that what you are asking? Or are you trying to rerout the flex cable?

    Thanks,
    Kyle
  • Hi Kyle,

    Thanks for the reply!

What I meant was - to remove the DMD from the driver board, I just pluck the flex cable off the driver board (so what I will have at that point is a DMD still connected to the flex cable and a disconnected driver board). Can I then flip the DMD around laterally and connect the flex cable in that orientation back onto the driver board? Physically it can connect, but I'm just wondering whether electrically that would work?

    Kind Regards

    Cheryl
  • Hi Cheryl,

Unfortunately the flex cable interface can not be flipped. Electrically it is designed to work in only a particular orientation only.

  • Hi Hirak,

Thanks! I will work with that. Can I ask a related question - I took out the DMD from the light engine, and in doing so I disconnected the DMD from the flex cable temporarily. I am assuming the DMD connection to the flex cable is designed also only to work in one orientation? How do I know which way around the DMD should go on the flex cable? If I can't tell, can I just try it - will it break anything?

    Kind Regards

    Cheryl

  • Hi Cheryl,

On observing the Flex Cable connector it can be seen there are two holes (pic1). One hole is bigger than the other.

And on observing the Flex Connector on the PCB it can be seen that the Connector number J27 is printed at one end of the connector.

While connecting, make sure that the SMALLER HOLE is on the side of the Connector marking (J27). That's the correct orientation.

    Hope this resolves your query,
    Regards,
    Hirak.

  • Hi Hirak,

Sorry, I think maybe I wasn't being clear. I meant the connection on the other end of the flex cable, so in between the DMD and the flex cable. Is there a right orientation for that part too?

    Kind Regards

    Cheryl
