DLP2000: DLP 2000 Form Factor

Part Number: DLP2000
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC2607, DLPA1000,

I am interested in using the DLP 2000 in augmented reality glasses, but the form factor of the controller design is way too big. I would think this would be one of the biggest markets for DLP 2000 so I am a little suprised it hasn't been slimmed own. Is there a way to buy a controller that is slimmer (maybe longer) or configured differently? Or is there a suitable third party controller that will work? I need to reduce the size footprint as much as possible. The optics are great but the controller is just too big. Any advice would be great.

  • Matthew,

Are you referring to the EVM/PCB design in this case, or the size of the DLPC2607 package?

  • Hi Phillippe,

The controller board itself and the parallel and SPI interface connections are too wide and and too thick. To fit into glasses the board needs to be long and thin. Glasses will be a huge business for TI in the future so it seems like this is something the company should contemplate. I am wondering how I could configure the DLP 2000 EVM to somehow fit into glasses. IIt seems like Vuzix figured it out. Is there someone who can design a new board or are there some other shapes to choose from?

    Thank You!

    Matt
  • Matthew,

In this case, it sounds like you are referring to the EVM's PCB design, rather than the package type of the DLPC2607 itself.

Although we do not provide alternative designs in different form factors for this system, we do provide all the source files that go with the system. Schematics, layout source files, and the like can be downloaded from the TI Design page associated with this EVM:
    www.ti.com/.../tida-01473

Using the layout files provided here, you could potentially redesign the board to suit whatever form factor you are aiming for. Be sure to follow layout guidelines provided in the DLP2000, DLPC2607, and DLPA1000 datasheets to ensure your design works as well as possible.

    I hope this helps.

    Philippe Dollo
  • Thank you Philippe. Your answers are excellent.
