DLP4710EVM-LC: Temporal sequence of bit planes for 1440 Hz external streaming

Part Number: DLP4710EVM-LC
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC3479, DLP3010EVM-LC

Hello,

We just ordered a DLP4710EVM-LC to try out, and we anticipate ordering more if it works as expected.

I've been looking through the documentation but can't find an answer to the following question (sorry if I missed something). Let's assume I put it in external streaming mode, give it a 60 Hz 1080p signal through the HDMI input, and want to get a monochrome 1-bit 1440 Hz output.

What is the temporal sequence in which the input color planes are projected? Like for instance the red least significant bit (1), red second least significant bit (2), red third least significant bit (4), etc.? Or some other sequence?

Also, Kyle said in an earlier discussion that only one LED can be turned on for any particular frame. I assumed that meant that it could always be the same LED on every (1440 Hz) frame. Is that correct? Or do you have to cycle through the red, green, and blue LEDs?

Thank you,

Mark

  • Hello Mark,

Have you had a chance to download the GUI yet? It is available at www.ti.com/.../dlpdlc-gui. It should better show you how the individual bit-planes can be used from a 24-bitplane input image.

You will have the option to use the same color LED for each pattern (red, green, or blue) OR you can sequentially illuminate each LED for each pattern (red then green then blue). You can select this option in the GUI as well.

    Thanks,
    Kyle
  • Hello Kyle,

I have downloaded the GUI and have looked through it, but cannot find the answer to my specific question: which of the 24 color bitplanes will be the first one shown in time, which will be the 2nd one, etc.

The only thing I can find, in the on-line help: "The first pattern displayed is PDATA 0 and the past pattern is PDATA 23." But what is, say, PDATA 0? Is it the least significant bit of the red channel? The most significant bit of the blue channel? Or something else?

    Thank you,
    Mark
  • Hi Mark,

Please refer to Figure 12 on page 30 in the DLPC3479 datasheet. PDATA [0] is LSB of Blue channel and PDATA [23] is MSB of Red.

    Regards

    Azad

  • Thank you, Azad, for your reply. Looking through the data sheet, I have another question (sorry). In section 8.3.1.1.2, "1-Bit Monochrome Patterns," it says that the output can be up to 2500 Hz. Does that mean that if I set the HDMI input at, say, 100 Hz (and referring to section 7.2.1, I realize that the input cannot be 1080p at that frequency, but OK, I can use 720p that's scaled to 1080p), I can have 1-bit output at 2400 Hz? I know that the DLP3010EVM-LC is capable of that, but didn't think that the DLP4710EVM-LC could it as well.

    Thank you,

    Mark

  • Hi Mark,

Thanks for pointing this out, it's a typo. As mentioned in page 1 of the datasheet, DLPC3479 supports pattern rates of upto 180Hz for 8 bit patterns and 1440 Hz for 1 bit patterns. I'll have the datasheet corrected.

    Regards
    Azad
  • Thank you, Azad.
