DLP4710: Inquiry for the remove of light engine

Part Number: DLP4710

Dear Sir or Madam
My name is Chenliang Chang. I am a researcher from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. We bought and are using your DLP product (DLP LightCrafter 4710EVM Gen2) and I have a technique question now. We just want to use the DMD as an individual spatial light modulator and do not need the light engine (LEDs) so we plan to remove the light engine and use our own illumination to the DMD. However, we find that the DMD chipset must be used with the connection with LEDs. So I want to ask is there any method that we can change the settings so that the DMD can work without connection with LED? Could you please provide how to do this?
Thanks.

  • Hi Chang,

Welcome to e2e forum and Thanks for showing your interest in DLP Technology.

Yes, LED should be connect to the device. If LED's are not connected then it may damage the few IC's specially PAD chip. So, we can not recommend to remove the LED's from the system (Light Engine).

Can you please tell me what application you are working on, then we may find a other way possible to help you .

    Thanks,

    Navneet

  • Hi Navneet

Thanks for your reply. We are working on the project of head worn related (near-eye) display and want to use the DMD as a micro-display with other illuminations instead of its LED. So if the LEDs must be connected then it is OK and accepted because I find that I can turn off the LEDs using the GUI software.

Now I have another problem. After I connect the DLP with computer using the HDMI cable, I find that the LEDs start to be flashing and the image appears on the DMD also changes sequencially. It changes from the "DLP logo" to my computer's image (i.e., desktop) and then to others (I did not see clearly). So I want to ask what is wrong with it? How can I make it to stable and to display only my computer's image?

Thank you for your time to my email. I look forward to hear from you.

    Best

    Chenliang

  • Hi Chenliang ,

It's good catch, if your application can work with disabling LED's then yes you can use the commands available in GUI for disabling the LED's.

I am not sure what image you are seeing, but once you connect the HDMI and provide the 1080p source @60Hz you will see the HDMI input image on the screen. I would suggest to see the resolution you are sending to the LightCrafter also check in your graphic card setting at what frame rate you are sending the data. Once Light crafter EVM  detects the correct resolution then it will show the only HDMI input source image.

You can check in the GUI what input resolution is coming, in Video and color page in GUI.

You can also explore the advance page in GUI and then see the resolution in Display page, also check the Input source select in input page in advance GUI, it should be external video port. Also read the Auto framing Information on the same input page to see properties of the coming data. This all will help you debug the issue.

If still can't figure out the cause, please send me the all information i mentioned above along with screenshot of the image you are seeing on screen while connecting to HDMI.

    Thanks,

    Navneet
