DLP3010: How to set 120Hz frame rate and 1440Hz color frame rate on DLP3010?

Hi, experts,

The DLP system that we use are DLP3010, DLPC3433 and DLPA2000. 

May I know how to set 120Hz frame rate and 1440Hz color frame rate but still keep 1280x720 resolution?

    Are you using our EVM or a customer board with different software? Is your front end using parallel or a DSI source? As long as the firmware you has supports 120 Hz you can simply configure your input for 1280x720 resolution with a 120 Hz input. 

    Could you also please confirm what you mean by the color rate?

    We designed the board with DLPC3433, Flash and DLPA2000. Flash stores initial setting code for initialization. And, we have MCU with software to send commands to control DLPC3433 through I2C after HOST_IRQ is low. 

    And, our front end is using DSI source. For 120Hz input source, we will ask our software content team to generate 120Hz video source. 

    For the last question, I measured and got that there are 4 color cycles (BGRBGRBGRBGR) in my DLP. And, the color frame rate is 720Hz if RGB duty is same. (60Hz frame*4 color cycle*3 color=120Hz) 

    For the requirement of 1440Hz color rate, it means

    1. 60Hz* 8 color cycle * 3 color

    2. 120Hz *4 color cycle* 3 color

    I'd like to improve color breakup in our 60Hz system and future 120Hz system.

    Thank you for clarifying. Yes, please send 120 Hz and let me know if you have any issues getting it to display. 

    Where did you get the software from? We should be able to assist finding a better sequence to improve color breakup. However, it depends where you got your software from.

    We only have the lite version, not the whole version. 

    If we need to update the setting that is not in our lite version, we need a help from our light engine vendor.

    Yes, I still need assistance from you. 

    I got that our DLPC FW version 5.3.6 already are 120Hz frame rate enabled.

    And, I need to set dsi_parameters command (address 0xBD)  for the DSI clock rate of 120Hz frame rate. 

    But, may I know what is the suitable input timing for 120Hz that includes HFP, HSYNC, HBP, VFP, VSYNC and VBP?

    And, what is the updated sequences that you memtioned for better color breakup? How to do it?

    Is this 120 Hz over DSI? Note with 120 Hz over DSI at 1280x720p resolution the data format cannot be RGB88 and instead I would recommend RGB565. Is this acceptable to you?

    I think that your are right that DSI data lane of DLPC3433 must be less than 470Mbps. 

    If so, we will check if the picture quality of RGB565 is ok for us. Please send the suggested timings when you get back. 

    And, I heard from Taiwan TI's FAE, we also can enable 3D function to have 120Hz frame rate. There is also 2ms adjustable black insertion. 

    But, he didn't mention about RGB bit loss. Does DLPC3433 have this function? Or which DLP chip has the related function?

    The RGB565 constraint is due to the bandwidth limits of the DSI port. This is for the DLPC3433. 


    I talked to the  FAE and they should have more information for you. Essentially I would recommend trying the WVGA (854x480) resolution at 120 Hz RBG888 using a 2D sequence. We currently have an additional limitation with the 720p source at 120 Hz that we are still working on solving. Your FAE should also be able to point you in the right direction of what sequence requests to make to your optical module supplier.
