DLPDLCR3010EVM-G2: What's the max current draw possible for J8 connector?

Hi. I'm looking to replace the original LED fans with a 3rd party solution for a project and have options to choose from however these vary in the amount of current they can draw. I've searched the documentation and I could only confirm it's a 5V DC output. Can someone tell me the max wattage I can extract from this J8 connector?

Hi A Cordi,

The DLPDLCR3010EVM-G2 has 19V to 5V Step-Down converter on the mainboard. This regulator is rated for a maximum current of 3A.

The 5V is mainly used for the regulators on the DLPA3000 to create VINTF and the P2P5V. Both regulators have a max current limit of 400mA.

Hence, you should have at least a margin of 2A for operating the fans.

Thank you for the detailed response Mayank. I've some catch up to do as my knowledge on electronics is general but you've summarised it for me on the 2A line!

Quick follow-up: what is the risk to the board/components if I were to put more load on the connector? e.g. try to draw 4 amps (for argument's sake) Would something break or simply the device I plug into J8 would not work? do the regulators have a "cut off" function to protect the board components?

The device that you plugin would not work. But still, it is recommended to operate the EVM within its specs.
