Hello everyone,

I found the design of a fiber connection module for the NIRscan Nano on your homepage and I am currently trying to build it myself since Optecks and TI do not sell it anymore to my knowledge.

I asked the questions below already to Optecks and they told me to write to TI directly.

I have some questions about the fiber that should be used for this connection module:
For maximal signal a round to linear fiber should be connected to the spectrometer to illuminate as much of the slit area as possible.
I assume the design was done with a Thorlabs-fiber bundle in mind, since the SMA-connector is also a Thorlabs-part.
I wanted to ask what fiber diameter is best to use ?
Thorlabs offers two options namely 105µm and 200µm, which one is best suited for the module ?

I contacted them about purchasing the module, I also asked them about the fiber diameter.

Can you provide an answer to the question what fiber diameter to use with the connector in case they can't ?

Hi Robert,

For this fiber connection module we recommend a round to linear bundle fiber like this to maximize coupling between the other end of the fiber and the slit like this one from Thorlabs.

The slit in NIRscan Nano is 1.8mm tall. Therefore, an optimal fiber would be roughly that tall.

Using a round to linear fiber bundle helps improve efficiency because most illumination / measurement sources that are collected by a fiber have a radial falloff from the center of the fiber. Using a larger fiber would spread out the energy over the entire fiber area (for instance, a 1.8mm diameter fiber). Using a round to linear bundle preserves the intensity of the collected light at the center of the source and reshapes it to approximately the shape and size of the slit. The Thor bundle is pretty close and readily available.
