DLPLCR4500EVM: HDMI not connecting

Part Number: DLPLCR4500EVM

Hello,

I am trying to run my DLP Lightcrafter 4500 in Video Mode, but it does not seem to be connecting successfully using the HDMI connector. The problem remains when connecting using several different PCs (all of them have no problem connecting via USB and communicating via the GUI). I have tried using PCs with both an HDMI output and a DVI-D output that go into the HDMI-mini connector on the 4500. The HDMI cable is working when plugged into a different device.

The problem is reminiscent of the issue reported here: https://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp/f/94/t/710640?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=DLPLCR4500EVM%252520hdmi

I purchased the device at the end of April from Digi-Key, does this mean I am past the warranty period?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Jon

  • Jon,

If you are unsure of your warranty expiration date, you should contact Digi-Key to confirm. You may want to share your proof of purchase here as well (like in the thread you linked).

Are you able to communicate with the system at all?

    Regards,

    Philippe Dollo

  • Hi Philippe,

Thank you for your reply, I have contacted Digi-Key about a replacement and am waiting for a response.

Yes, I am able to connect using the USB port and play pattern sequences via flash memory without issue (as well as upload my own images to flash).

Is there some LED to indicate the recognition of an HDMI connection? I saw this thread (https://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp/f/94/t/641502?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=DLPLCR4500EVM%2520d3) discussing a D3 LED, but I'm not sure where to locate it.

    Best,

    Jon

  • Hi Jon,

We will look into  the question about D3 LED and get back in couple of days.

    regards,

    Vivek

  • Hi Jon,

Thanks for your patience. Kindly find the location of D3 marked in the below Image. This LED should come up when HDMI is connected to the EVM.

  • Thank you, Hirak. Our unit's D3 LED indeed remains off when the HDMI cable is connected (tried several cables now). I'm still in contact with Digi-Key, who will let me know how we can proceed with a replacement.

On another note, perhaps I could ask a question regarding one of the LCR4500's functionalities? I am wondering if it is possible to run the LCR4500 in Video Mode (or any other mode like Pattern Sequence with HDMI) in a way where each bit-plane of every 24-bit image is exposed for the same amount of time. This is possible when using the flash memory Pattern Sequence mode, where I can specify each bit-plane to have equal weighting, but I am looking for a solution where this is done automatically and at high frame rate. Ideally, I'm looking for something close to 120 24-bit frames per second, which roughly translates to 120*24 = 2880 1-bit fps.

    I appreciate all the help!

    Jon

  • Jon,

The team will need to investigate whether any modification to the video mode sequence is possible. What do you mean when you say "a solution where this is done automatically"?

    Regards,

    Philippe Dollo

  • Essentially, I'm looking for a Video Mode (i.e. the LCR4500 behaves as a projector), but where each bit-plane of every 24-bit image to be displayed gets the same exposure time. My application only requires sequences of 1-bit images, and we'd like these to play as fast as possible.

When I say automatic, I mean this can be done without manually setting each bit-plane to have equal time, as is the case in flash memory Pattern Sequence mode.

    Thanks!

    Jon

  • Hi Jonathan,

It is possible to meet your requirements. You will need to define an external pattern sequence by adding all 24 bitplanes in one single frame and having equal exposure time for each bitplane. An example INI is attached for your reference that displays each bitplane from each incoming 120Hz video frame for equal time, in red color. You can apply this INI to LCR4500 using the GUI for test purposes, and then can further modify according to your requirements.

    https://e2e.ti.com/cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/94/vid24_5F00_120.ini

  • Thank you very much for the .ini file, I am looking forward to trying it in the near future.

I have been issued an RMA from Digi-Key, but they require a contact from TI that is familiar with my issue to complete the process. Philippe or Hirak, may I give them one of your names/contact info? Is there a way to send private messages rather than using the public board for this?

Again, I appreciate all the help!

  • Hi Jonathan,

You can provide them my details. Also, we can carry this conversation on private message as requested. I will send you a friend request on E2E forums. So I will be closing this thread.
