DLPDLCR2000EVM: Can't finish the design of an equivalent PCB for Raspberry Pi 4 because of missing symbols, footprints and 3D models

Part Number: DLPDLCR2000EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC2607, DLP2000,

Dear support team,

I am working on my Senior Design project to graduate as a Computer Engineer, along side with two other Computer Engineers and an Optics Engineer. Our project requires to make a projector, and we chose to use the DLP techonology you guys have, and specifically the DMD DLP2000AFQC and the associated components due to cost. Very similar to the EVM themed in the thread, except that we are using a Raspberry Pi 4. I bought the EVM and got my Pi working and our code in there all good thanks to your previous posts. Now, I've been working out of EAGLE cad and I just finished wiring the DLPC2607 data connections to the Pi and all the power inputs. However, when I started trying to connect to the DMD, I can't find the DMD in ultralibrarian, nor the connections from ACE electronics for the flex cable that goes to the DMD, PS-50028-05081-001.

Following the schematics available in your site, this is our progress thus far:

Now, some questions:

  1. Any chance you can help us locate the footprints for Eagle for those parts? at least for the DLP2000?
  2. Any idea as to why some of the pins in the DLPC2607 footprint have an 'X' in Eagle? is that supposed to be that way?
  3. Any chance you can help us with that firmware build for the EVM that boots to a black screen?
  4. Any chance you have the schematics available for the optic engine where the DMD is located at?
  5. From your other DLP products, should we be looking to alternatives?

Thank you in advance for your assistance, and special thanks to Philippe Dollo and Christopher Smith for the very helpful answers in this forum! It got us really far. You two are legends!

Cordially,

Gus and the rest of the team.

  • Hi Gustavo,

Welcome to E2E forums! Please allow us some time to look into this issue. An expert will get back within a couple of days.

  • Hi Gustavo,

I am glad that our resources have been able to help you thus far. Please reupload the attachment in the original post, as we are unable to view the progress that was posted. I will try to answer your questions one at a time, and we can conclude with some resources you may find useful moving forward.

    1. DLP2000 DMD Footprint

The footprint may have to be designed yourself using the CAD/CAE documents on ti.com. As shown in this FQC package drawing, the DLP2000 DMD will come pre-attached to an AXT642124DD1 board-to-board header for interfacing it with your flex cable. More information on the AXT6 header can be found within its datasheet here: https://www.mouser.com/datasheet/2/315/con_eng_f4s-1075761.pdf.

The flex cable (J1) will have to be purchased separately. Its datasheet can be found here: https://www.datasheets360.com/pdf/5792835906398754958.

In addition to the CAD files, all the technical documentation for the DLPDLCR2000EVM can be found here. In the Gerber .zip there will be an example .brd file of the EVM board, which can be used for reference when designing your main PCB. On this PCB, there is also a reference design of the layout for where the flex cable will sit on the EVM.

    2. DLPC2607 Controller Footprint

I am not familiar with the Eagle-developed footprint for the DLPC2607, however, the datasheet for the controller will have layout guidelines starting on page 36. Page 42 has an example of the DLPC2607 footprint and fanout on a PCB. The package used for this controller is the ZVB Ball-Grid Array (BGA), and information on its dimensions are on the mechanical data page of the controller's datasheet (starting on page 45).

    3. DLPC2607 Custom Firmware

Custom firmware for the DLPC2607 can be released to you whenever you are ready to program the firmware to a flash device. The flash device used on the DLPDLCR2000EVM is out-of-service, but a compatible SPI flash memory device can be sourced ensuring it complies with the serial flash interface requirements summarized in section 7.4.1 of the DLPC2607 controller datasheet (starting on page 25).

If it is preferable to program the flash over I2C, please see the DLPC2607 programmer's guide

    4. 0.2" nHD Optical Engine

The optical engine used on the EVM is the FLE2 optical engine from Young Optics. Unfortunately, since this is third party information, you will have to contact Young Optics directly for more information on the optical schematic used in the FLE2. They can be contacted by emailing them at young_optics@list.ti.com.

If you are interested in designing your own optical engine, please see our application report on optical module specifications for DLP Pico systems.

As our lowest-price option, the DLP2607 chipset is the most appropriate DLP chipset for a senior design project to construct a projector.

I hope that these sufficiently answered your questions. Moving forward, I would recommend going through some of the other documentation we have on DLP technology. This application report on Getting Started with TI DLP Display Technology will aid in demonstrating how all the parts work together (and on their own) as well as some different components and features that can be integrated into the system as stretch goals in your senior design project.

    Best of luck,

    Chris

  • Hi Chris,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I am afraid that some of the links did not transfer over, and that the DLP2000 might not be available with the pre-attached AXT6 interface.

The two links I was not able to open are:

    FQC Package drawing: https://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp/f/94/t/944135/FQC %3Ca%20href=%22https:/www.ti.com/lit/ml/mclg015a/mclg015a.pdf?ts=1601312837443&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.ti.com%252Fproduct%252FDLP2000%22%3Edrawing%3C/a%3E&_ticdt=MTYwMTMzMDM3N3wwMTcyOGFiNGYyYTMwMDExNTY4ODBjNDc3NTNlMDMwNzIwMDI4MDZhMDBiZDB8R0ExLjIuMTI5ODEyMDQ5NC4xNTkxNDY1MDE0fDA

    Flex cable: https://www.datasheets360.com/pdf/5792835906398754958

At this point, I don't think we are capable of completing our project in the way we expected. We will need to reach out to our professors and work out something else, however, I really appreciate the amazing and thoughtful answer. Please reach out if you or anyone on TI would like to dive deeper into our challenges working with this technology, in case there is an improvement opportunity.

    Cordially,

    Gus

  • Gus,

    Thankyou for the update.

    Regards,

    Mayank

  • Hi Gustavo,

I apologize for the broken links.

The FQC package information can be found here: https://www.ti.com/lit/ml/mclg015a/mclg015a.pdf

The flex cable is reference J1 on the DLP 2000 EVM bill of materials, which can be found here: https://www.ti.com/lit/df/tidrs02/tidrs02.pdf

I understand your concern. Please accept my friend request on E2E and we can discuss further the different options in coming up with a feasible senior design project.

    Thank you,

    Chris
