DLPNIRSCANEVM: Do I need to flash SD card to get the NIRSCANEVM to work?

Part Number: DLPNIRSCANEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC350

Hi everyone,

I'm having a very difficult time connecting to my NIRSCANEVM (not the Nano). I tried using Ethernet as well as the USB but for the life of me, cant get it to work. I will post details here later in a subsequent post.

But my question is:  Do I need to flash the SD card on the EVM with the files provided by TI on their website? One mentions microSD card - see below

If not, what is the purpose of these files files? Are we supposed to install the Linux files on the SD card which runs on BeagleBone?

I took a look at the contents of the current SD card as shown below, but not sure if I need to replace it with the abovementioned files.

This is a brand new EVM and no changes have been made so this is straight out of the box.

Again, I'll post all the details regarding the issues I'm having with connecting to the EVM in another post. But for now, just wanted to ask this simple question before pulling more of my hair out.

  • Hi Matt,

Yes, you will require a MicroSD card to flash the Sitara SW onto the NIRScan EVM. Please also look into installing the RNDIS drivers on your PC to get the USB to work.

  • Hi Hirak,

Thank you for the reply, I'm surprised that TI did not make any mention of this critical step in any of their user manuals. Their YouTube video makes it seems like it works 'straight out of the box' which is not exactly correct.

That said, I'm assuming I need to install the Sitara software files namely the AM335x Sitara ARM SDK  (.bin, Linux files) onto a new SD card, correct? I'm assuming this has the built in web server and other components to run the EVM.

However what is the purpose of the two other files, namely 'Software Bundle for Linux' and 'MicroSD Image for Windows'? Unlike the Nano which uses an desktop user interface, this EVM uses a standard browser so  I'm not sure what these two other software versions are for.

In regards to the software is there a step wise procedure? That is, do I install the SDK first, then these other files? I see TI has instructions but they seem so confusing for anyone that is not a IT programmer. I just want to use the EVM!

Thank you again for all you help,

    Matt

  • Hi Matt,

    Thank you for your patience.

Hirak will be able to respond to your software questions regarding the Sitara and Linux software by end of day Thursday (October 1).

    Regards,

    Austin

  • Hi Matt,

Normally the EVM is supposed to work out of the box. Sometimes the Flash image loaded onto the device may get corrupted, that is why we suggest reflashing in case of any problem.

Regarding to the loading procedure, a step by step instruction is provided on the NIRScan EVM User Guide Appendix C NIRscan EVM Reprogramming Procedure.

Kindly look into this section and try to reprogram the SITARA SW and also the DLPC350 FW and recheck if you are able to use the EVM.

  • Thanks Hirak,

I'll look into this over the next 2 weeks and report back as soon as I can and close this out once its resolved.

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • Thank you.

    regards,

    Vivek
