DLP4500: Confirm regarding UV frame rates for DLP4500 and DLPC350

Hi Team,

The customer reviews the information from Table 4.1 of this link (https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/dlpu011f/dlpu011f.pdf), However, there is no mention of how the frame rate changes with the UV option compared to the RGB reference design in the documentation. They would like to know how frame rates and refresh rates change with a single 405 nm LED.

They are looking for >2400 FPS for their application and curious to know how can achieve this frame rate. Their current investigation shows the splash screen is 24 FPS, with on for <10 miliseconds, and off for 40 miliseconds.

Please let me know your comment.

Jonathan,

Which DMD part number is the customer interested in using? The DLP4500 is rated down to 420nm illumination.

Are they attempting to compare monochrome visible light to UV LED operation?

According to our customer, they are using the Wintech PRO4500, a TI DLP reference design that uses a 405nm LED source. The application here is to increase the framerate of the image from 240 FPS to 2400 FPS or higher. What is the easiest way to do this?

Jonathan,

Per the DLPC350 datasheet (https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/dlpc350.pdf) on Table 8 the 1-bit pattern rate for this device goes up to 2880 Hz when using an external source (4225 Hz is possible with internal pattern streaming).

This pattern rate is achievable with an external input source by packing multiple 1-bit patterns within the 24 RGB888 channels typically used in an external video stream. Since the maximum RGB888 input rate is 120Hz with this device we calculate as follows:

(1-bit/pattern) * (24 bits) * (120 Hz/frame) = 2880 Hz (patterns/frame)

I just got an update from the customer below:
To make sure that I can address the whole response correctly, I just quote the customer feedback:

"So I'm showing that the splash screen is 24 FPS in 0.1 seconds. or 240 FPS total.

Under slow motion camera, I can see the splash screen is 24 FPS, with an on time for <10 miliseconds, and off for 40 miliseconds.

Why is the off state so long? Is it because the chip is expecting RBG, not a single UV LED?"

Why is the customer using a splash screen to display their pattern? How have they configured their system?

I hope this response of the customer is helpful:
They tried updating the internal flash, but when validate and send a new solution it restarts the projector and shows nothing instead.

Hello Jonathan,

As a point of clarity, sending a new command restarts the projector? Would this be switching between modes or Looks?

Generally speaking, it would be wise to restart the system after a flash update to allow the controller to boot with the newly flashed program.
