DLP7000: Full Optical Simulation of DMD, with diffraction

Part Number: DLP7000

Hello,

My research group is looking at new applications for DMDs in physics, as an analysis tool for optical diagnostics. To progress, we require a comprehensive model of the effect of the DMD on the complete optical system and its PSF.

I am asking the forum whether any member can advise me on existing DMD optical software models. Our group uses ZEMAX OpticStudio for optical modelling, and this package does contain a DMD (MEMS object) model. Unfortunately this model is not a full functional description of DMD properties, because it cannot account for diffraction (it is however adequate when simple ray optics is sufficient).

I would be interested in hearing of any DMD simulations whether in ZEMAX or in other codes; there are techniques for embedding user-defined code into ZEMAX to describe the behaviour of new objects within an optical beam-line.

Many thanks.

  • Mark,

First, welcome to the DLP section of the TI-E2E community.

You are correct that the DMD (MEMS object) model provided in ZEMAX is not a complete model. We do not have anything that we are able to provide.

Maybe others in the community have created something that they are willing to share.

  • Thanks Fizix.
I am coming to the conclusion that either an approximation to the DMD using existing ZEMAX objects such as gratings, or a special DLL which extends ZEMAX with a new object, may be required.
But it is always worthwhile asking whether anyone has already met (and maybe overcome) the problem.

  • Mark,

I agree with you that it never hurts to ask before you set about to re-invent the wheel!
