DLPLIGHTCRAFTER: Cannot upgrade DM365 firmware [MacOS]

Part Number: DLPLIGHTCRAFTER

Hello Guys, how are you all?

So I just decided to work on a project with my old DLP Lightcrafter, but I am not able to connect to it through the GUI, so I decided to upgrade the firmware. So, I downloaded the revE user's manual, but got the same problem as this guy: https://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp__mems_micro-electro-mechanical_systems/advanced_light_control/f/850/t/499551, couldn't find the "lcr_boot_sd.sh" file.So I kept looking and found this post: http://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp__mems_micro-electro-mechanical_systems/advanced_light_control/f/850/p/176873/1174087

As I am on a mac, I figured I could follow the linux instructions, because the commands are the same. So I dd'd the DM365 .dat file, as downloaded from the bundle for mac, into my SD formatted as a FAT32 card. Later I inserted it into the DLP and turned it on. In the end, it gets stuck in the last splash screen and won't go any further.

Can anyone help me? Please?

  • Hi Lucas,

Sorry you're having trouble! A couple things to get out of the way:

    * What is the current rating and voltage for your power supply?
    * What type/size of SD card are you using?
    * Were you able to find the lcr_boot_sd.sh file?

    Thanks,
    Paul
  • Hey Paul, thanks for the quick response.

So, I'm using a power supply that matches the specifications, 5V and 2A.
    I'm using a Multilaser 8gb.
No, I was not able to find the lcd_boot_sd.sh file, I created the boot SD through command line.
  • A couple things that you can try. 2A power supply may not actually cut it, we've had better luck with 3A power supplies. If you can find one with a higher current rating than 2A or use a bench top supply, see if that solves your issue.

Do you have any smaller SD cards? This system is old enough that it actually prefers non SDHC cards. If you have 4GB or less SD card (ideally non SDHC) you may have better luck getting this to work. I was able to get mine booted with a Kingston 4GB SDHC.

    Hope that helps,
    Paul
  • Thanks Paul!

About the power supply, the DLP is working fine with the NAND, booting pretty fast! So it looks like it making its part, right?

About the SD, I thought about that too, but still didn't get the chance to buy a new-old (sorry for the bad joke, lol) SD. So, in the meanwhile, I wanted to get that .sh script to create the boot card, so I'm sure I didn't screw anything up.
  • To clarify, the Lightcrafter boots normally with NAND, and gets stuck on the SD card?

One more thing I'd like to check/understand. Are you trying to boot from SD or simply reload the FW? In both cases, make sure you have the DIP switch set the right way. Also, if you're just trying to reload the FW, know that you will have to power cycle the device and remove the SD card. Carefully follow the directions in sections 2.13.2.3 and 2.13.2.4 in the user's guide.

I've attached the .sh file. Let me know if it works.

    lcr_boot_sd.zip

  • Hey Paul, thanks for the .sh file! I'll try it out soon!

About your questions, I was first trying to boot from the SD, to make sure the SD was working (which wasn't). And I checked the DIP switch, it was towards the right place!

I'll get back here soon, to let you guys know if the .sh saves my life! Thanks!
