changing optics on Pico projector development kit v2

Hello,

I would like to replace the LEDs and lenses in the pico projector kit with some custom optics based around a low-power laser.  Is it possible to open the box and to remove these components without having to mechanically break anything?  I am comfortable with the optical and electrical design, but I am concerned whether there are interlocks or pieces of plastic welded in place that will make this tricky.

Of course I understand that this project will void the warranty :).

Thank you!

Adam

  • Adam,

You can quite easily disassemble the Pico Kit v2. The PC board assembly will unplug from the light engine, by pulling up in the correct direction. Be careful, there is a flex cable which will remain connected. The two main PC boards will separate, by carefully pulling apart. The flex cable (the LED signals) can be detached by carefully lifting the latch on the connector (on the PCB end). The PCB with the DMD socket can be removed by loosening 2 screws. The DMD1700 is attached to the light engine with a retainer (3 screws).

If you look at DLP® Pico MAIN-B SCHEMATIC there is a signal (LED_ANODE) that comes back to the MSP430 from the LED interface. When this signal is above 1 volt it detects that the LEDs are not connected. Pull it to ground to make the Pico initialize without the Light Engine connected. The schematic for the DLP® Pico DVI-B SCHEMATIC has the LED interface.

There is no guarantee - of course. Proceed at your own risk. But, you should have no problems.

See the photos (below) of the disassembled Pico Kit v2.

  • I see that the pictures didn't post. So, I'm attaching them as files.

  • And the other picture - of the DMD end of the light engine.

  • Hi Pascal,

I have a question about the this projector kit. As shown in the picture, the optical engine (left part of the picture) has a 60-pin array and another 6-wire pad. Do you know the pin definition of all these 66 pins?

    Thanks,
