DLPDLCR3010EVM-G2: Lightcrafter does not start anymore after unplugging the LED

Part Number: DLPDLCR3010EVM-G2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC3433, DLPA3000

Hi,

I unplugged the RED LED of my LightCrafter and try to start it: it did not work.

I plugged the RED LED back but the lightcrafter is still not booting (LED D2 stays ON). It seems that it is in a locked state. How can I make it work again?

Note: I plugged/unplugged the LED while the lightcrafter was off (power supply not connected).

Kind regards,

Julie

  • Julie,

The DLPDLCR3010EVM may not boot properly if any of the LEDs are unplugged, so this is not unusual behavior. However, it is unusual that your system is not booting up after reinstalling the LED. I recommend you try reseating all of your connectors to ensure nothing got loose as a result of trying to modify the system.

    Best Regards,
    Philippe Dollo
  • Hi Philippe,

I unplugged and plugged back all the LEDs connector as well as the fan connector and the DMD flex. But this did not change anything, the lightcrafter is still not booting.

When I try to turn it ON, I have the following LED status: LEDs D2, D4, D9 and D10 are on, all the others are OFF. Is there anything else I could check (some signal I could check on the board)?

Have you tried on your side to unplug a LED, turn on the lightcrafter, turn off the lightcrafter and plug back the LED? Because this is the second lightcrafter we break this way...

    Kind regards,

    Julie

  • Julie,

Have you tried updating the firmware. If not, can you try updating your Firmware : www.ti.com/.../DLPDLCR3010EVM-G2

As you mentioned D2 is on, So that means projector is not booting up. Pleasae refer this document page 6 for LED refernece :www.ti.com/.../dlpu058.pdf
  • Hi Navneet,

Yes I have tried to update the firmware. The update seems to have been done correctly but the issue remains the same:

The D2 LED is still ON

The DLP LightCrafter GUI indicates "EVM Status: Connected, turned off"

When I select "Advanced" and "Read System Software Version" I get the following error message: "Read Cmd:SystemSoftwareVersion, addr:37, subAddr:d2 SendRead(FAILED(1))" (LED D6 remains OFF when I click on the READ buttons while LEDs D7 and D8 are lit during a few seconds).

Can you confirm that you have not the same issue after trying to start the lightcrafter with one LED unplugged?

    Kind regards,

    Julie

  • Julie,

As you mentioned D2 LED is on that indicates it fails somewhere in boot up sequence that's why you are not able to communicate with EVM.

We are trying to reproduce the issue as you mentioned, we will let you know the result very soon.

    Thanks,
    Navneet
  • Julie,

Can you check few things on your side.
    1. Voltages to DLPC3433 controller.
    2. All voltages driven from DLPA3000. for reference check datasheet here : www.ti.com/.../dlps052.pdf

    Thanks,
    Navneet
  • Hi Navneet,

Did you manage to reproduce the issue?

    Kind regards,

    Julie
  • Hi Julie

Thanks for your patience. We have been able to successfully reproduce your scenario. The issue is with the DLPA3000 Power Management/LED Driver IC. There is a feedback mechanism within the IC to regulate the current supply to LEDs. On running the module with one LED disconnected without properly configuring the DLPA3000, the latter tries to drive current in an open circuit, which could potentially damage the IC. Please refer to section 7.3.2.5.2 in the DLPA datasheet for more information.

In our case, we were able to rectify the issue and get the EVM working by replacing the DLPA3000 IC. I'd suggest you do the same.

    Regards

    Azad

  • Hi Azad,

Thanks for your answer. How can we change the DLPA3000? Should we send you our lightcrafters so that you can make the replacement?

    Kind regards,

    Julie

  • Hi Julie

Please contact a TI authorized distributor for the same. You can find the region-specific list of distributors here.
