SN65LVDS31-EP: Output Tolerance

Hi Team,

In one of our customer's application they need to provide information concerning the fault tolerance of SN65LVDS31-EP. In cases of failure of the LVDS receiver (end-device), 3.6V will be directly applied to the differential outputs Y and Z pin. The reference post mentions that the SN65LVDS31-EP output can withstand VCC+0.5V, would this still be applicable even if the applied voltage (due to the receiver fault) to the output is 3.6V (VCC max)?

Hi Jejomar,

Yes, since the absolute max ratings table has the Vcc range as -0.5 to 4 V.

Many thanks for your response. Is the Vcc+0.5V part of the abs max rating as well? Or would it be considered in the "recommended" range?

Can you help us on what will be the case for cold sparing when the device is OFF? Would this still be applicable? The cold sparing section mentioned that I/O voltages applied must be within the specified recommended operating conditions". Will the Vcc+0.5V be part of this recommended operating conditions?

Hi Jejomar,

Vcc + 0.5V is an absolute max rating, yes.

In cases when the device is off and the system is using cold sparing, the recommended I/O voltage range would be 0 to 3.6V.
