THVD1552: Effect of noise

Part Number: THVD1552
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THVD1512

Hello,

I have a question about THVH1512(SIGNALING RATE:up to 500kbps) and THVD1552(SIGNALING RATE:up to 50Mbps).
Is the one with higher SIGNALING RATE more sensitive and susceptible to noise?

Best regards,
DDdoor

  • Hi DDdoor,

The different speed ratings for these devices has minimal impact on the receiver portion of the IC. Noise immunity will be similar for both devices on a basic level. However, a slower data rate signal can be more resilient to coupled noise. One reason for this is that high frequency noise and possible glitches in the system will account for less of a bit period for slower data rates. Similarly, the device rated for higher speeds has a driver with a faster slew rate. This means each edge will contain more high frequency energy which is more likely to ring in a system and may create more noise. Slower slew rates have less of this high frequency energy and are thus more stable in non-optimized or large bus topologies.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

  • Hello,Eric Schott

    Thanks for your reply.
Please tell me one more thing.

A customer is considering whether to use the THVD1512 or the THVD1552.
If the data rate is 9600 bps, will both be able to handle more than 4000 feet in cable length?

    Best regards,
    DDdoor

  • Hi DDdoor,

Yes, these devices are typically able to support this length and data rate combination. See Figure 24 on the datasheet and corresponding Data Rate and Bus Length section.

I would recommend use of the THVD1512 for this application and to avoid introducing unnecessary high-frequency energy to the system as discussed in my previous response.
