SN65MLVD2: Is it better to connect the power pad to GND terminals (No. 4 and 5)?

Hello guys,

One of my customers is considering using SN65MLVD2DRB for their new products.

At this moment, they have the following question about the device.

Could you please give me your reply?

Q. DRB package has a power PAD at bottom side.

Is it better to connect the power pad to GND terminals (No. 4 and 5)?

Or is it better to leave the power pad no connection to GND?

Pin 4 and 5 need to be connected to the PCB ground. Please follow the LAND PATTERN EXAMPLE on Page 21 for the recommend thermal pad PCB design and Page 22 for the solder paste example. For more detail, please refer to this app note, https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/sn65mlvd2.pdf.

Hello David,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I checked the LAND PATTERN EXAMPLE on Page 21 for the recommend thermal pad PCB design

and Page 22 for the solder paste example.

But I didn't know if it is better to connect the package thermal pad (Power Pad) to GND.

Could you please tell me whether the thermal pad needs to be connected to GND or not?
