SN65HVD72: can use THVD1439 as a drop in replacement?

Part Number: SN65HVD72
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THVD1439,

Hello Guys,

Good day.

Our customer have used SN65HVD72D in the past but cant find any to buy. Do you know if they can use THVD1439 in the same socket with the surge devices left off the PCB ? Will these two chips co-exist on the same 485 bus without issue ?

Thanks and regards,

  • Art,

The THVD1439 is available in the same SOIC package as the SN65HVD72. The THVD1439 comes with internal surge protection by the integration of internal TVS diodes within the package. The internal protection package provides +- 15VDC bus fault protection and +-4kV IEC 61000-4-5 1.2/50-us surge protection. No external protection circuitry required.

In terms of co-existing on the same bus, take note that there are some differences between the devices recommended operating conditions such as the THVD1439 operates on a voltage level from 3V to 5.5V VCC, while SN65HVD72 operates from 3V to 3.6V VCC. The electrical characteristics sections concerning the driver and receiver capabilities slightly vary, but should be close between devices. The THVD1439 is a newer part, and introduces higher quality electrical characteristics in some areas of the datasheet.
