TPS25750: how to configure Source only , PD provider setting in Config Utility

Part Number: TPS25750

HI,

We are testing this EVK using the TPS25750 as the main PD IC and wanted to set it to Provider only mode

We are experiencing an issue where if a power loss occurs during PDO power output state and the TPS25750EVM is set to SINK/SRC (since SInk is not possible to be eliminated in the config utility) some Microsoft/Samsung/Google devices will not go back to sourcing power from EVK as it will turn into SINK mode

we are needing a solution that could involve hardware jumper to GPIO to make PD Provider only option (for now only working with TPS25750EVM)

Thanks

  • The TPS25750 will only operate as a DFP (Provider) for greater than 5V when using one of the 5 listed TI battery chargers.  If you have configured the part to be a DFP without selecting a charger, you will be limited to 5V.

  • I don't think you understood the issue

its a power loss issue, when power is applied to TI EVM and than C cable plugged into a C PD device all is well, all profiles and devices are able to charge... If however the power is interrupted to the EVM it simply does not restore Provider Mode it just sits there in Source mode as clearly pictured above

  • Rozycki,

Is power to the barrel jack being removed in your test?

If the Barrel jack is still connected, then the TPS25750 will not reset  it should negotiate to the preferred power state.

I can replicate what you are doing, but I need to understand the test to repeat it exactly.

  • OK, let me try

TI EVM is powered via DC JACK, while providing power to the type C device  (whatever that PD profile and or power level may be in Source Provider Mode) once Power is interrupted to the DC jack,TPS25750  simply changes role to SINK mode and once power is restored it will not reset back to Provider Source mode ... Can we fix this with Firmware and or should we do a hardware trigger for rest TPS25750   (so It can be back to Source Provider mode)

  • Radoslaw,

If you have a MCU in your system, you can trigger a power role swap by issuing the SWSr 4CC command to the TPS25750 via the I2Cs bus.

  • It would be cost prohibitive to add an MCU

We selected this specific IC combination due to its easy of use in stand alone applications, as per datasheet TPS25750 can be SOURCE only and that is what we are trying to do via firmware...  ... so is it possible to remove SINK Profile in firmware and or add a Gate FET for type C power output only

  • Rozycki,

The TPS25750 can be configured as a 5V only source,  This is on eof the configuration options of the GUI, in that case, you will never operate as a sink.

Will this work for your system?

  • Not sure why it would only stop at 5V profile as a Source , if OTG is fully implemented in the evaluation kit and the BQ25731RSN is the Buck/Boost controller

is it simply a config utility issue?

  • Radoslaw,

If you are using the supported BQ chargers, then the TPS25750 will provide all possible PDO using the BQ charger to present the appropriate voltage and current.

If you are using any other source, the TPS25750 will only support a 5V PDO.

We will be releasing a new GUI that will improve the integration and address some configuration and firmware bugs with the TPS25750 in 2 weeks which will make this process much easier.
