TUSB2046I: What kind of clock source is allowed for 48 MHz input? Datasheet says no crystal, should I use a MEMS oscillator?

Part Number: TUSB2046I

Hi, the datasheet for TUSB2046X states for pin TSTPLL/ 48MCLK: "If 48-MHz input clock is desired, a 48-MHz clock source (no crystal) can be connected to this input terminal."

Does this mean I can't just use a 48 MHz crystal oscillator? Do I have to use a 48 MHz MEMS oscillator instead? Or does this refer to not connecting the 6 MHz crystal to this pin?

  • Hi,

Correct, you cannot just use a 48 MHz crystal here. You can refer to Figure 7. 48-MHz Input Clock Configuration for some clarification.

"For 48-MHz operation, the clock cannot be generated with a crystal using the XTAL2 output because the internal oscillator cell supports only the fundamental frequency." - page 3 of datasheet.
