TCA9535: Switching between input and output

Part Number: TCA9535

Hi All,

I have a question about TCA9535.

The I/O terminal is used as an input, and the input terminal is pulled up to 5V.
The unused terminal is connected to GND.
If I / O is switched from input to output in this state, will the IC be damaged?

If it's output low, then it wouldn't be a problem but if its output HIGH then you would have contention with the PFET into GND which would likely cause high current and saturate the FET. I would think this could cause an issue with heating due to high current draw. I technically think this could damage the device if you were pulling over 50mA based on the absolute max spec'd in the datasheet; This would technically depend on what Vcc you use since the saturation current would change as you change Vcc.

Our datasheet recommended operating condition states you should not try to pull more than 10mA when driving HIGH so I would not recommend you do this and would suggest this to be fixed/changed.
