DS3486: Would work as an alternative for DS3691(obsolete)?

Hi Experts,

Good day. Hope you are all doing great.

We would like to ask your assistance as I am having difficulties in looking an alternative for the obsolete part DS3691.

My client are updating their design with this RS422 line driver and looking an alternate for the part. They need a replacement RS422 driver with tri-state +5V/-5V or +10V/0V output voltage levels for compatibility with legacy MIL-STD-188-114B equipment. The only drivers we've been able to find so far are only +5V or +3.3V.

Are you able to advise or recommend a suitable device or alternative solution? As per them, a board re-layout is required anyway, so any solution need not be pin-compatible with the old DS3691.

Also, I am seeing the part DS3486, do you think it would work as alternative?

Thank and God bless.

Regards,
Archie A.

  • Archie,

I'm sorry for the delayed response. As far as I know, the supply in RS-422 systems is always positive. I think DS3691 needs Vcc and Vee to work with RS-423 applications. As I searched, I could not find another RS-423 driver in TI. You may have to use an amplifier with similar driving capability for replacement. BTW, DS3486 is quad receiver, not driver.

    Regards,
