SN65LBC184: Cross Reference for MAX483ECPA+

Part Number: SN65LBC184
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THVD1410, , THVD1500, THVD1510, THVD1400

Hi,

Good Day. Can the customer use SN65LBC184 as a replacement for the MAXIM part MAX483ECPA+. As I check the BOM and cross reference tool, SN65LBC184 is not listed as a replacement for MAX483ECPA+ instead THVD1410, THVD1500, THVD1510. But these three devices is not available on our inventory as of this moment but SN65LBC184 has a stock. What are the pros and cons of using SN65LBC184 as a replacement for MAX483ECPA+. How about the pros and cons of the three devices suggest on BOM and cross reference tool? What is the best among the said devices as an alternative? Please advise. Thank you very much.

  • Hi Ray,

SN65LBC184 as a p2p replacement for the MAX483ECPA+ will work. LBC184 has more input voltage range on the RS-485 bus, and has similar drive strength to the MAXIM device. The cross-reference tool will always choose more updated parts (THVD1410, 1500, 1510) before listing SNx5 series. All three parts would work as p2p replacement.

Main differences between for the THVD series are as follows:

    THVD1400 VCC supply range is 3.3V ~ 5.0V

THVD1500 VCC supply is up to 5V

These are the lower cost devices.

THVD1410 and THVD1510 have the same voltage supply to their respective series, but have higher ESD protection (+/-18kV IEC), and therefore of increased cost.

I have attached a flyer for more detail device comparisons here.

  • Ray,

The SN65LBC184 is a good replacement for the Maxim device. Relative to the THVD1410, THVD1500, and THVD1510, the biggest differences are slightly lower fault protection (+/-15 compared to +/-18 on the THVD devices) and only capable of 250kbps, where the THVD devices are capable of 500kbps. The Maxim device is only capable of 250kbps though, so this should be a moot point.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Regards,

    Eric Hackett
