ESD Protector for Type-C Pins

Hello,

I am searching the ESD Protection Device for Type-C' s CCx, DM and DP pins.

I wonder what is the nominal working voltage of these pins? and what ought to be the maximum clamping voltage I would look for on ESD Protection devices?

I am looking for automotive qualified devices. Do you have any suggestion?

Hello Mehmet,

The max operating voltage for the CC pins is 5 V and DP/DM is 3.3 V. The maximum clamping voltage is going to depend on the device you are protecting. Some USB controllers/conditioners are more sensitive than others. Can you share the device you are trying to protect?

Hi Matt,

Thank you so much for your response. It will be a USB Type-C Charger Project. I am planning to use TPS25858QRPQRQ1. As you can see, there is no esd protection inside the ic. Therefore I have to use external esd device to protect.

it is writing CCx, DM, DP Pins' absolute max. rating is 6V.

I think it is hard to find a esd device which has suitable these pins.

Hi Mehmet,

Since there's 4 CC and DP/DM pins per connector, you could use a 4-channel TPD4E05U06-Q1 device to protect all of them at once.

You could also single channel devices on each individual pin. For the CC pins I would use TPD1E05U06-Q1. For the DP/DM pins, I would use TPD1E01B04-Q1 which will give better clamping performance.

You can also use a TPD1E10B06-Q1 to protect the Vbus pin as well.

Hi Matt,

But these esd devices' clamping voltage are higher than 6V. As you see, TPS25858QRPQRQ1 IC's absolute maximum ratings is 6V.

So, I a little bit confused.

Hi Mehmet,

The abs max ratings for most IC datasheets are for constant DC voltages. While the best practice is the keep to clamping voltage under tis abs max value, the transient abs max voltage will be higher. Usually, this is measured by using a transmission line pulse (TLP), but is not very common to be spec'd for most ICs. As far as TI's current portfolio goes, these are the best diodes for this application, and have been proven to work in other applications like this well. You can see in this reference design the TPD1E05U06 is being used to protect the CC lines on the TPS25740B whose abs max is also 6 V.
