SN65HVD1471: Can this device support signaling at higher rates?

Part Number: SN65HVD1471
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVD1474

Hi experts

I would like to know if this device can be used for signaling above 400kbps, for example at 950 or 1000 kbps.

I have an application that I am already using it at a higher rate and I'm not seeing any issues, but wanted to understand if the 400kbps rating implies it shouldn't be used at a higher speed.

Thanks!

  • Hi Jim,

    Thanks for reaching out!

So its not recommended to go above 400kbps with the SN65HVD1471 - this is due to a rather long transition time:

At typical conditions - a transition from low to high and then back to low is about 2x typical so around 800ns for a full cycle and that goes up as the application temperature does. This transition speed greatly diminishes the max speed the device can operate at. That being said - the 20kbps is meant across temperature so if the application is closer to room temp or colder the device can speed up and higher speeds are possible - and this could explain why you haven't seen an issue at slightly higher speeds- but I'd like to stress its still not recommended as this devices transition times can be long enough where if faster signals come through the device the slower transition time can cause data reliability issues as the max value is possible and that is a high low high cycle time of ~1.5us which could definitely cause issues at 950/1000 kbps  - this is where I'd push the SN65HVD1474 as its just a faster version of the 1471 and will handle 1000 kbps without issue.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

    Best,

    Parker Dodson
