TPD4E05U06: Short to VBUS in USB-C Implementation

Part Number: TPD4E05U06
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD6S300A

Hello,

Based on the below E2E forum discussions on protection from VBUS:  our understanding is the TPD4E05U06 is capable of acting as ESD protection on the CC lines of a USB-C port and is also capable of protecting the port controller in a short to VBUS event.

Is that true? Or do we require some other IC to protect from shorts to VBUS?

using TPD4E05U06 to protect Vbus - possible without separate IC?

TPD6S300A: VS TPD4E05U06

USB TYPE C VBUS Protection

Thank you, Keith

  • Hi Keith,

That is not true. TPD4E05U06 is only meant to protect against transient voltages like ESD and surge, not constant DC voltages like a short-to-Vbus event which would need to be handled by another device like TPD6S300A. If you are wanting to use TPD4E05U06 in combination with a short-to-Vbus protection device, you would need to make sure the Vbus voltage does not exceed the Vrwm of the device, which is 5.5 V.

    Regards,
