TPD2E2U06: TPD2E2U06 for Ethernet ESD protection

Hi Team,

The customer is considering using the TPD2E2U06 for Ethernet ESD protection and they are thinking about where to place it.

According to P.19 of the following document "TIDU706A", TPD4E1U06DCK is placed between RJ-45 and magnetics.

1) Why is it placed here not between PHY and magnetics?

2) In this case, would it be possible to meet 10BASE-T(1500Vac, 1minutes)?

3) When using TPD2E2U06, which should it be placed between RJ-45 and magnetics or between PHY and magnetics?

    Most of the time, TPD4E1U06 should be placed between the PHY and magnetics due to its low Vrwm. In this configuration, it would not be able to survive 1500Vac for 1 minute. However, for this application, there might be a guarantee that there will not be any high voltage AC events or significant ground shifts. That is probably why they put the device on the connector. 

    In my opinion, it's best to put it on the PHY side every time because the transformer will be able to offer its full protection capability.

    Thank you for your reply.
    This document, TIDU706A, in "1.System Description" of P.2 says "The design supports 10/100 Base-T and is compliant with the IEEE 802.3 standard.".

    I think it is designed to survive 1500Vac for 1 minute, what do you think about it?
    Please let me know if there is any other reason to placed it on the connector side.

    Unfortunately, the engineer who made this design is no longer at TI, so I'm not sure if they ran any compliance testing with the 1500 Vac for 1 minute. I would play it safe and put the TPD4E1U06 on the PHY side of the transformer.
