MAX232: What is the maximum baud rate, that it can operate.

Part Number: MAX232

Hi,

What will be the maximum baud rate that can be operated using the MAX232IDR ??. In the datasheet, it is given that the max. speed is 120kbps. In terms of the baud rate, what will be the max. baud rate, which can be used for this module?

  • This device is usually used with the UART protocol, which uses one bit per symbol. So bps = baud.

  • Hi Sujin,

Clemens' is correct! UART protocol uses one bit per symbol, so bits/second = baud.

This means that the maximum recommended bit rate is 120kbps for the MAX232IDR, according to section 10.2.1 of the datasheet. Technically you can go faster, but of course this comes at a cost with diminishing signal integrity.

Check out this website that talks about the differences between bps and baud rate here.

    Regards,

    Tyler
