SN65LVDS31-EP: Alternative to AM26LV31?

Hello E2E Experts,

Good day.

I found SN65LVDS31-EP which covers the temperature range (-55'C to 125'C) and works with 3.3V nominal.

 Do you see any reason for the incompatibility between this and my original AM26LV31ID?

Can SN65LVDS31-EP be used to replace AM26LV31ID? What are the differences if any?

    Hello CSC,

    The main difference is the protocol used in the SN65xx device is LVDS while the AM26xx is targeted for RS-485/RS-422. One of the differences you will see is drive strength vs speed.

    RS-485 has a higher output differential voltage (1.5 V vs. 340 mV) meaning this device can be used with longer cable lengths in noisy environments, however, at the cost of speed. This is the opposite in LVDS. Looking at the specs, the AM26xx only a max signal rate of 32 Mbps while the SN65 device has a max signal rate of 400 Mbps.

    Ensure the system will be able to read the low differential voltage coming from the SN65xx and that the drive strength isn't a huge factor. Using LVDS with longer cables will cause jitter. Below I've added an Application Note that goes more into detail.
