TCAN330G: Connecting TCAN330G and THVD2450.

Part Number: TCAN330G
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THVD2450,

Hello.
I want to use a TCAN330G and a THVD2450 (RS-485) in the same design.
Both components will share the same Bus I/O port but also the driver data inputs and the receiver data outputs.
Both will be soldered on the PCB and the user will select which protocol to use.

If I use CAN protocol according to THVD24x0 datasheet, I can set DE and disable \RE and there are no problems with TCAN. THVD2450 will place the bus IO and the receiver in High-Z .
However, if I use RS-485 protocol and set Shutdown, I have a doubt if the bus IO and RXD (recessive state H) of TCAN will not interact with THVD.
Is it possible to connect both components as shown?
Sincerely.
Jerome

  • Jerome,

In shutdown mode, the CAN transceiver's CANH and CANL pins are set to high-Z and will not respond to traffic, similar to the case of setting DE and disabling \RE on the THVD24x0. RXD is supposed to be a logic high in shutdown mode, so what you're seeing is correct.

If this is correctly implemented, meaning that when the THVD is communication, TCAN is in shutdown mode, and when TCAN is communicating, THVD has DE set and \RE disabled, this will work. In that case, the communication bus pins will be in high-Z for either device when the other is communicating, thus not affecting the bus of the other.

    Regards,
