TCAN4550-Q1: What does "Dominant with bus fault" mean?

Part Number: TCAN4550-Q1

Hi team,

What does "Dominant with bus fault" mean? Datasheet test condition says "See Figure 7-3 CANH = - 25 V, RL = open, CL = open VCCOUT = no load". What does this condition mean or when does it happen?

Regards,
Ochi

  • The TCAN4550-Q1's outputs are either inactive (recessive state), or pull CANH high and CANL low (dominant state). During normal operation, the output current flows only through the termination resistors. But when the cable is damaged and an output is shorted to a supply rail, more current flows.

  • Thanks Clemens!

    Hi Ochi-san,

The CAN driver includes an internal current limit to this specified value in order to protect the transceiver during a fault condition. As Clemens mentioned, this current will be much smaller under nominal conditions when only the load of the termination resistors is being driven.

Let us know if you have any more questions.

    Regards,
    Eric Schott
