DP83849IF: 100BASE-TX AND 100BASE-FX MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE WITH A SINGLE MAC

DP83849 is a dual port device, which means two MAC interfaces are present. As your MCU has only one MAC interface, I would recommend to have a look at our DP83822HF PHY which supports both copper and fiber media interface.

thank you very much for the super fast answer.

I took into consideration the DP83822HF, but I was skeptical with the possibility to connect, the fiber optic transceiver, through caps, and the RJ-45, through magnetics, at the same time. I mean, the board must communicate with optical fiber or with the TP depending on which media the end user will connect to the board. Based on this analysis I was thinking to use the DP83849IF in the configuration presented in "Figure 5. Single with Dedicated Copper and Fiber Ports" of the AN-1509 PhyterDual Flexible Port Switching document.

Are my considerations wrong? I will be more than happy to use the DP83822HF if it can do what I need.

Hi Massimo,

Your considerations are correct, for your application DP83849IF will be more suitable as you have to configure the registers/ straps on DP83822HF when ever you want to switch between media interface.

Sorry, I did not undestand if I can use the DP83822HF and switch dynamically between TP and fiber. Can the RJ-45 and the Optical Fiber trasceiver be wired simultaneously (let's say connected in parallel) to the PHY?
