Hi Pohua,
Both devices contain 2 full duplex RS-422 compliant transceivers.
The difference is that SN75ALS1177 has 1 Drive enable (active high) and 1 receive enable (active low) that control both transceivers.
The SN75ALS1178 however includes 2 Drive Enable Pins (active high) and the receivers are always enabled - i.e. they have no control pin.
So either option is possible for you requirement - but they do differ in terms of control scheme.
