SN65HVD3082E: To confirm RS-485 transceiver circuity

Part Number: SN65HVD3082E
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO6721

Hi Expert,

The customer is followed the common methods of Application Brief (SLLA416C) to deign the isolated RS485 interface.

Now they find there is simple solution from two channel isolated can completed the applicant in the market:

Pls advice whether this is matured solution today.

Thanks

Eric

  • The NSI8021 is a digital isolator for two unidirectional logic signals (like TI's ISO6721).

But RS-485 signals are neither unidirectional nor logic signals. This circuit will not work. You would need an isolated RS-485 buffer that supports RS-485 signals on both sides; such a chip does not exist as far as I know.

  • Hi Eric,

Clemens is correct - this is not going to be a workable solution.

The review guide you point to gives two solutions.

    1. Add Isolator between controller and logic pins of the RS-485 device

    2. Or Use a Isolated RS-485 Device

The method you proposed isn't listed and it introduces a lot of risk.

    Best,
