ESDS302: Is it possible to use for DP83822I

Part Number: ESDS302
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ESDS314, , DP83822I, ESDS304

Dear Specialists,

My customer is considering ESDS302 and ESDS314.

They have a question about

---

Could you please tell us know the following question about the diode with Vrwm=3.6V.

・Currently, I am using DP83822I with a power supply voltage of 3.3V.

I checked the single-end voltage of TX/RX on the device.

The output ranges from a minimum of 2V to a maximum of around 4V, centered around 3.3V.
(Basically it operates like outputting 3.3V±0.5V.)

A significant portion of the waveform is above 3.6V

In this case, what kind of problems will occur when using ESDS302 and ESDS314 (Vrwm=3.6V) under the above conditions?

When the voltage exceeds 3.6V, the current will flow to GND via the diode.

Will there be any deterioration in waveform quality or negative impact on compliance tests?

---

I appreciate your great help in advance.

Best regards,

Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi,

There will be no issues in diode performance if the operating voltage exceeds 3.6 V. There may be slight leakage current but as long as the operating voltage doesn't exceed the breakdown voltage of the diode (which is  a min of 4.5V for both devices). If it exceeds 4.5V then there is a possibility of significant amounts of current to leak.

ESDS302 and ESDS314 are devices that we recommend for Ethernet applications and specifically for DP83822I.

Please let me know if you have additional questions or comments.

  • Hi McKenzie,

    Thank you for your reply.

I understand ESDS302 and ESDS314 are for Ethernet application.

In another words, ESDS302 and ESDS314 can use VCM 3.3V.

Are there any reference designs with DP83822I or other Ethernet Phys ?

I'll share your answer with the customer.

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi,

Please let me know if I can offer any assistance with the ESD devices.

With regards to the Ethernet reference designs, there is typically an EVM included with each Ethernet device. This user guide for the EVM will include information on operation, characteristics, and use of the device. This is the link for DP83822 user guide (link). These user guides/EVMs can be found on ti.com.

    McKenzie

  • Hi McKenzie,

    Thank you for your reply.

You mentioned ESDS304 and ESDS314 is for Ethernet application.

So I'd like to obtain reference design Ethernet PHY with ESDS302 or ESDS314.

I think it helps customers understand more deeply

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi,

Unfortunately, we don't have a ti.com reference design using ESDS302 or ESDS314 with a TI Ethernet PHY. If you would like I can try to make a generic schematic using DP83822I and ESDS302 for showing placement and layout.

Please let me know what you think.

    Best Regards,

    McKenzie

  • Hi McKenzie,

    Thank you for your reply.

    Not needed this time.

It's easy to get confused, so I would like the reference design and compliance test results to be made available as a reference design in the future.

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi,

We can work with the Ethernet team on this in the future. Please reach out if you have any questions or comments.

    Best Regards,

    McKenzie

  • Hi McKenzie,

    Thank you for your comment.

I'm looking forward to the release of the reference design in the future.

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi
