TCAN1057A-Q1: RXD output current

Hi Team,

I promoted TCAN1057 to customer for CAN communication, I see there are two spec in datasheet: 8mA max ratings and 2mA continued recommended. Could you please help me further understand the differences? If customer need 6-7mA current, is this device suitable? Thanks a lot.

8mA maximum rating is the rating at which the device won't get damaged. 2mA is the level at which the parameters in the datasheet can be guaranteed. So yes, the device could be used for 6-7mA, but then how would they pull this current out of the RXD pin? And why do they need 6-7mA?

So what is the maximum current capacity it can support? From my understanding, 8mA is the stress, and 2mA is the guaranteed value, seems 2mA is the typical capacity, right?

Francis,

2mA are limits set based on design and PVT corner testing for normal operation. You are correct, 8mA is where the device could see damage. So while 7mA is lower than the stress limit, it's above normal operating conditions, and other RXD parameters cannot be guaranteed at that point.

For a CAN transceiver, no we do not have a device like that. Can you elaborate on this requirement?

Hi Eric,

SN65HVD251 can meet the requirement, which is shown as below. But customer told me that this device is EOL.

TCAN1057 8mA is not enough.

Why exactly do they need 10mA current capability on the RXD pin? I need to understand where this requirement is coming from in their application. And where did the customer hear this part was EOL?
