DS100MB203: split 10G eth

Hi,

In our application we have to split a 10G ethernet connection(we are choosing about 10Gbase-KR or 10Gbase-R) from one port to two clients.

We exploring possibility to use DS100MB203SQ for this purpose. In particular use fanout buffer side to split TX (sender side) and use mux for RX(sender side) like picture below.

Since only one clients at time have both tx/rx connected, is it possible that both client are able to receive data or not?

With KR I'm worried about autonegotiation feature and link training. Maybe is it better with 10Gbase-R?

Hi,

In general, 10G-R will be easier to implement than 10G-KR because there will be no debug necessary to get AN and LT working.

Based on the description of the system you provided, I think 10G-KR theoretically can work. Since only one client will be active at a time, I think AN and LT should work between the port and the active client despite the fanout. When you switch which client is active, I expect there will be a link down period and the devices will need to re-negotiate.

How much insertion loss is expected in this system? We recommend a minimum of 8dB IL on the input to the DS100MB203 for 10G-KR applications.

thank you for your answer. In your opinion, is it possible that client with its tx disconnected is it able to receive packets?

Maybe with 10G-R?

Hi Giuseppe,

At a physical layer level, it will be possible to configure the DS100MB203 to send packets to both clients simultaneously. It should be possible for the client with the disconnected tx to receive packets with 10G-R.

I'm not sure if there is any requirement for the client MAC to establish a TX connection with the link partner in order to establish an Ethernet linkup state, although it seems like this should not be a requirement as long as AN and LT are disabled (i.e. 10G-R).

This document from Cisco seems to support that unidirectional Ethernet is a valid configuration.
