ESD2CAN24-Q1: Difference between CAN and CAN FD

Hi Team,

We are comparing the ESD2CAN24-Q1 and ESD2CANFD24-Q1. According to the datasheet, we didn't find too much spec or data difference between the ESD2CAN24 and ESD2CANFD24, we would like to learn which value is the key spec for ESD2CANFD24 to support CAN FD?

Due to our pcb is reserved SC-70 pkg to ESD production TVS, we also would like to know if ESD2CAN24 can support CAN FD communication?

CAN FD uses higher data rates, so the "FD" diode has a lower capacitance to allow a higher signal bandwidth.

Here is a list of diodes with a working voltage of at least 24 V and a low capacitance: ti.com/interface/diodes/esd-protection-diodes/products.html#1498=Automotive&3285=24;36&1516typ=0.13;2.5
There is none in the SC-70 package.

If the total capacitance of your CAN bus is low enough, then you might be able to use a diode with a higher capacitance.

To add onto what Clemens said, the main differences between ESD2CAN24-Q1 and ESD2CANFD24-Q1 is capacitance, ESD rating, and surge current. I have provided a table below to compare the two. Also, ESD2CAN24-Q1 comes in both SOT-23 and SC-70.

Just curious, why the CAN FD part doesn't have SC-70 package?

We have reserved SC-70 layout on the PCB, or can we apply ESD2CAN24 for CAN FD network?

Hi Frank,

Yes, you can use ESD2CAN24 for the CAN FD network. I wasn't hear at the time of this part definition so I am not entirely sure why the CAN FD part is not in the SC-70 package.
