TLK106: Are the CMC really needed for on-board applications? And where to place it?

Part Number: TLK106

Tool/software:

Hello

I am using a card from a 3rd supplier with an ethernet interface that uses the TLK106. The termination is already on this card, but the bias and caps for the center tap I need to put on my board.

I am interfacing it to a COM (Computer on module) that sits right next to it. (a few inches trace length). Can I skip the CMC and if I really need it, why does it need to be installed on the PHY side? It doesn't make sense as it will fight against the single ended signal from the drivers? If I really need it, can't I install only 1 common mode choke on the TLK106 TX on the COM side and for the COM I could install a CMC on the TLK106 PHY RX side? Or no CMC at all as it's all the same board and GND anyways?

Thank you for your recommendation

Cheers

Michel

  • Hi Michel,

Please note that TLK106 is NRND and thus support is only limited to datasheet content. In theory, from a regular functionality standpoint, the CMC should have no impact on the PHY. However, we have seen placement have bigger impact on EMC designs. You are free to experiment for the most optimal placement of CMC with respect to your requirements of the system.

    Sincerely,

    Gerome

  • ok, thank you, I will try that as I only have a short distance on the PCB between the 2 devices.
