TCAN3404-Q1: Interoperability of TCAN3403-Q1 / TCAN3404-Q1 with 5V CAN devices

Part Number: TCAN3404-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN3404, TCAN1044A-Q1, TCAN3403-Q1

Tool/software:

Hello team,

I hope you are doing well.

Recently we found a socket of 3V3 CAN in display project, and TCAN3404-Q1 was promoted, there are some questions need to check with you:
Because the paired CAN in the other side is still a 5V CAN, TCAN1044A, so I am not sure if it is feasible to pair TCAN3404 with TCAN1044A?

From my understanding, it should be TCAN1044AV in the other side and VIO should be powered by 3V3 rail, so that TCAN3404 can pair with TCAN1044AV, right?

Thank you!

  • Daniel,

Great question, thank you for posting on E2E.

Your question has two parts: First, the VIO pin of the TCAN1044AV-Q1 only impacts TXD and RXD voltage levels between the device and the MCU. The CAN bus is not impacted by the voltage level used on VIO. So for the “other side” 5V CAN node, it does not matter whether that design needs TCAN1044A-Q1 or TCAN1044AV-Q1, as this is just determined by the allowable voltage levels of that node’s MCU.

The second part of your question is about interoperability of TCAN3403-Q1 / TCAN3404-Q1 with 5V CAN devices like TCAN1044A-Q1. One of the top benefits of these new automotive 3.3V CAN transceivers is that they can communicate on a mixed 5V and 3.3V network without issue. This means that your customer’s project can use TCAN340x-Q1 regardless of whether the other nodes on the network use 3.3V CAN or 5V CAN.

There is a white paper that contains lots of detail about this, but the most relevant section to your question is section 4, titled “Interoperability (IOPT) of TCAN340x-Q1” which goes through this in detail, see Automotive Qualified Electromagnetic Compliant 3.3V CAN FD Transceivers.

    Best,

    Danny
