The GFO pin allows you to basically have a specially-programmed GPO coming from the SBC which allows you to control another transceiver without needing to use an additional MCU GPIO port. Its function can be programmed to behave in multiple different ways, so it allows the user to implement many different applications of channel expansion. You'd generally connect the GFO pin to the EN or STB pin of a CAN or LIN transceiver, depending on user preference.
