TCAN1043A-Q1: About CAN BUS sleep and power saving remove VBat (TCAN1146, TCAN1043A)

Part Number: TCAN1043A-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi, Support Team

our client are studying how to save power in sleep mode(All power off, only INH/VBat live).
So VBat will be key power consumption.
Follow datasheet (TCAN1146, TCAN1043A) VBat is one of power-up sequencer.
If we don’t need that channel can be wake-up.
Can we just no connection Vbat?

if any suggestion, Please advise me.

Thanks,

Best regards,

Lawrence

  • Hi Lawrence,

Thanks for reaching out about this.

I want to clarify that when TCAN1043A is in Sleep mode, INH is high-impedance so the INH line should be low.

VSUP (also labeled VBAT) must be connected for the device to operate. However a design could be created to connect/disconnect the VBAT line so as to save even more power. Just note that powering on the device from a cold start (VBAT=0 -> VBAT = 12V for example), the start up time is around 310 us. This is tPWRUP in the datasheet.

For reference, the current draw when the device is in Sleep mode is around 18uA:

  • Hi, Ethan

Sorry for late reply, about TCAN1146 the behavior is same with TCAN1043A?

if any suggestion, Please advise me.

    Thanks,

    Best regards,

    Lawrence

  • Hi Lawrence,

Yes, TCAN1146 also requires VBAT/VSUP. Its tPWRUP time is a maximum of 4ms after VSUP is above 4.5V. In Sleep Mode, TCAN1146 has a typical current consumption of 2.5 uA.
