PCA9548A: Can it cascade more than three levels?

Part Number: PCA9548A

Tool/software:

Hi Expert,

My customer uses PCA9548/9546 that cascade three levels. Now they want to update the old solution and don't want to change the original design. One solution is adding one more level. Now they want to know if it works? or is there any bad impact of signal chain with 4 or more cascaded levels?

BR,

Moon

  • Hello Moon,

Yes, you can cascade further, but it will affect signal integrity. Since, our multiplexers can be regarded as resistors you will basically have 4 resistors in series. The current leakage will linearly increase as well. Moreover, the bandwidth of the mux will decrease the more you have in the cascading chain.

For more information we have this cascading multiplexers app note, which goes more into details.

    Thanks,

    Nir
