SN65LBC179: Recommended Alternatives to SN65LBC179D / THVD1451D

Tool/software:

Hi,

We are currently using TI’s RS-422 line drivers SN65LBC179D and THVD1451D in our design. However, we are experiencing issues related to noise immunity and are now considering alternative solutions.

Could you please recommend any device(s) from your portfolio that meet the following requirements?

  • Pin-compatible and same package as SN65LBC179D / THVD1451D (e.g., SOIC)

  • Power supply: 5V (3.3V compatible if possible)

  • RS-422 compliant

  • Similar rise/fall time characteristics

  • Operating temperature: -20°C to +105°C or higher

  • Explicit specification of high noise immunity (e.g., ESD, EFT ratings)

Best regards,
Conor

  • "Noise" can mean many things. What are the voltages and frequencies of that noise? What is the signal frequency?

For high-frequency noise and slow signals, a transceiver with a lower maximum data rate (i.e., slower edges) can help.

What kind of cable are you using? Shielded twisted-pair has the highest noise immunity.

Adding common-mode chokes can improve noise immunity.

  • Hi Conor,

As Clemens pointed out, do you have more information on the exact noise issue you are seeing?

Generally you can try to address this using external components to try to filter or attenuate the noise on the bus. Cabling is also a big part of it, with shielding being able to attenuate the signal before it hits the actual bus.
