I was looking at the

SN65HVD1050

and need to know if this supports the SAE J1939.

Also note the SN65HVDA1040-Q1: http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/sn65hvd1040-q1.html , the SN65HVD251: http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/sn65hvd251.html , and the SN65HVDA541-Q1: http://www.ti.com/product/sn65hvd251 also support J1939. Just a few more choices, if you might need them.

Agreed. SAEJ1939 uses a High Speed CAN trasnceiver, of which all of TI CAN transciers are. As Leonard points out you can use the SN65HVDA10x0A-Q1 (latest versions in -Q1 of the 10x0 families), the SN65HVDA54x-Q1 family (541/2/3 or the -5 versions) or the SN65HVD255/6/7 if -Q1 isn't as important. I would use one of these later versions due to the updated EMC and protection features added into the designs vs previous generations, then you just need to decide on extra feature set such as CAN wake up request via RXD, I/O level shifting, silent mode, redundancy, etc.
